Therapy for Celiac Disease
Support for the emotional and social demands of managing celiac disease.
A celiac diagnosis can bring answers and a long list of things to reconsider. Meals, travel, gatherings, and eating with other people may require more attention than they once did.
Therapy can help you discuss the stress, frustration, or worry that comes with those adjustments. Psychological support works alongside the medical and dietary care that celiac disease requires.

Your experience
Necessary precautions can still feel exhausting.
You may find yourself explaining dietary needs repeatedly, worrying about cross-contact, or missing the ease of eating spontaneously. We can talk about those experiences without questioning medically necessary gluten avoidance.
You may recognize some of these concerns and not others. What matters is how your own experience is affecting you and what you would like help with.
Eating with others
Explaining needs or asking questions can feel uncomfortable.
Planning and vigilance
Travel and meals away from home may take extra preparation.
Adjusting to diagnosis
Relief, grief, frustration, and uncertainty can coexist.
Understanding your care
Your experience deserves careful attention.
Celiac disease is an immune-mediated medical condition. A gluten-free diet remains a core part of treatment under medical and nutrition guidance. Counseling can address adjustment, distress, and the psychosocial demands of disease management.
At Embody Health Psychology, our clinical health psychology perspective considers physical health, emotions, relationships, and daily life together. That biopsychosocial perspective helps us understand your concerns without reducing them to a single cause.
An Integrative Approach
Our integrative approach considers how physical health, emotional experiences, relationships, and daily life influence one another. We draw from different psychological approaches to shape care around your concerns and goals.
We distinguish appropriate food-safety precautions from worry that is taking over your life. Therapy can support communication, coping, and flexibility within your medical recommendations. We do not recommend gluten exposure or replace specialist dietary advice.
You do not need to arrive with a perfect explanation. Your clinician will ask questions, discuss treatment options, and help you choose goals that fit.
Depending on your needs, somatic therapy techniques may support coping with stress around meals, social occasions, or medical care. They are not a treatment for gluten-related intestinal injury.
Internal Family Systems (IFS) may be useful when the need for dietary safety conflicts with wanting ease or connection. Therapy works alongside, and never relaxes, medically necessary gluten avoidance.
Your goals may include:
Adjusting to the diagnosis
Make space for what has changed and what remains uncertain.
Communicating dietary needs
Practice asking questions and explaining precautions clearly.
Keeping social connection
Explore workable ways to participate in meals and gatherings.
Addressing related distress
Discuss anxiety, low mood, or other concerns when they are part of your experience.
Finding a useful pace
Set priorities that fit your clinical needs and current circumstances.
Choosing next steps together
Review what is helpful and whether other care or support is needed.
Common questions
What you may want to know.
Will therapy ask me to be less careful about gluten?
No. Medically necessary gluten avoidance must be respected. Your medical team and dietitian guide dietary safety.
Can I seek support even if the diet is working medically?
Yes. The social and emotional demands can remain difficult even when physical symptoms or tests improve.
How does coordination with other providers work?
When coordination would be helpful, your clinician can discuss it with you. Sharing confidential clinical information requires appropriate authorization. Together, you can decide what is relevant to share.
