Your experience
The daily demands can leave little room for you.
You may know what your care plan recommends and still struggle to follow through. Fear, frustration, competing responsibilities, or years of constant attention can make familiar tasks feel overwhelming.
Whether you have recently been diagnosed or have managed diabetes for years, your experience deserves attention. We begin with what feels hardest in your own life.
Management burnout
The ongoing demands of monitoring, medication, and planning can leave you feeling depleted.
Fear and uncertainty
Worries about glucose changes, complications, or treatment can affect everyday decisions.
Pressure and judgment
Unwanted advice, self-criticism, or feeling blamed can make it harder to seek support.
Understanding your care
Both types deserve support that fits the person.
Type 1 and type 2 diabetes have different medical features and treatment needs. Both can involve emotional strain and demanding self-management routines.
For someone with type 1, concerns may include constant monitoring, device fatigue, or fear of low blood sugar. For someone with type 2, concerns may include adjusting to diagnosis, treatment changes, stigma, or sustaining recommended routines. Many experiences overlap, and your care reflects what applies to you.
Our clinical health psychology perspective considers your physical health, emotions, relationships, and circumstances together. Your diabetes team continues to guide medical treatment, glucose targets, and nutrition recommendations.
An Integrative Approach
Therapy addresses the emotional experiences and behavioral patterns that influence daily diabetes care. We explore what makes management difficult and develop achievable steps that fit your treatment plan and circumstances.
Depending on your needs, care may include practical problem-solving, strategies for health behavior change, and work with anxiety, depression, or self-criticism. We can also explore relationship patterns and how earlier medical experiences affect your current care.
With your permission, we can coordinate with your endocrinologist, primary care clinician, dietitian, or diabetes educator. Your goals may include:
Reducing diabetes distress
Work through frustration, discouragement, and the emotional burden of ongoing management.
Making daily care manageable
Identify barriers to monitoring, medication routines, appointments, and following your agreed care plan.
Addressing diabetes-related fears
Explore anxiety about low blood sugar, injections, complications, or medical visits.
Building sustainable routines
Develop realistic habits around sleep, movement, eating routines, and stress within your medical recommendations.
Working through shame and self-criticism
Understand how judgment and expectations affect your well-being and engagement with care.
Communicating your needs
Ask for useful support, navigate unwanted advice, and discuss concerns with your care team.
Common questions
What you may want to know.
Do you support both type 1 and type 2 diabetes?
Yes. This service supports adults with either type. Therapy is shaped around your experience, treatment demands, and the concerns you want to address.
Do I need depression or anxiety to benefit?
No. Diabetes distress and management burnout are valid reasons to seek support, even without a mental health diagnosis.
Can therapy help with following my treatment plan?
Yes. We can work on emotional and behavioral barriers to daily care, develop practical strategies, and coordinate with your medical team with your permission.
Does this include diabetes education or medication management?
We provide psychological care, behavioral support, and psychoeducation about the emotional and behavioral aspects of living with diabetes. Your medical providers guide medications and glucose targets, while diabetes educators and dietitians provide individualized diabetes self-management and nutrition education.
