Psychological Support for Gastroparesis
Help with the emotional effects of difficult symptoms, changing meals, and medical uncertainty.
Gastroparesis can affect meals, energy, and the ability to plan a familiar day. You may be managing nausea, early fullness, dietary changes, or treatment decisions while trying to keep other parts of life moving.
Counseling can give you space to discuss the stress, worry, and adjustment that accompany the condition. It works alongside medical and nutritional care rather than replacing them.

Your experience
Eating and planning can take more effort.
You may miss the ease of sharing a meal, feel frustrated by changing limits, or worry about how symptoms will affect a commitment. These concerns deserve attention even when you already have a GI treatment plan.
You may recognize some of these concerns and not others. What matters is how your own experience is affecting you and what you would like help with.
Changes around meals
Medical nutrition recommendations can affect social routines.
Uncertain capacity
Symptoms may influence work, travel, or daily plans.
Treatment-related worry
Choices and procedures can bring questions and mixed feelings.
Understanding your care
Your experience deserves careful attention.
Gastroparesis is a disorder of delayed gastric emptying that requires medical assessment and management. Psychotherapy can support emotional well-being and coping. It does not normalize gastric emptying or replace nutrition and GI treatment.
At Embody Health Psychology, our clinical health psychology perspective considers physical health, emotions, relationships, and daily life together. That biopsychosocial perspective helps us understand your concerns without reducing them to a single cause.
An Integrative Approach
Our integrative approach considers how physical health, emotional experiences, relationships, and daily life influence one another. We draw from different psychological approaches to shape care around your concerns and goals.
We consider the practical effects of illness, your medical recommendations, mood, and relationships. Psychological care can address symptom-related fear or food concerns while respecting necessary medical restrictions and nutrition needs.
You do not need to arrive with a perfect explanation. Your clinician will ask questions, discuss treatment options, and help you choose goals that fit.
Depending on your needs, somatic therapy techniques may support coping with anxiety around eating or symptoms. Exercises are adapted to your comfort and are not intended to change gastric emptying.
Internal Family Systems (IFS) may be useful when frustration, shame, or pressure to eat like everyone else adds to the burden of illness. Medical and nutritional care remain central.
Your goals may include:
Coping with illness-related distress
Make room for worry, frustration, and adjustment.
Communicating changing needs
Practice conversations about support and accommodations.
Maintaining meaningful connection
Explore participation within your current medical guidance.
Addressing related distress
Discuss anxiety, low mood, or other concerns when they are part of your experience.
Finding a useful pace
Set priorities that fit your clinical needs and current circumstances.
Choosing next steps together
Review what is helpful and whether other care or support is needed.
Common questions
What you may want to know.
Can therapy improve gastric emptying?
We do not make that claim. Medical providers guide treatment of gastroparesis. Therapy addresses psychological concerns and the impact on daily life.
Will you provide a diet plan?
No. Gastroparesis nutrition care should be guided by your medical team and an appropriately trained dietitian. Therapy can support the emotional experience of following that plan.
How does coordination with other providers work?
When coordination would be helpful, your clinician can discuss it with you. Sharing confidential clinical information requires appropriate authorization. Together, you can decide what is relevant to share.
Is telehealth available?
