Therapy for Health Anxiety

Help when worry about your health keeps taking over your day.

You notice a sensation, look for an explanation, and feel reassured for a little while. Then a new question appears. If this sounds familiar, health anxiety therapy can help you understand the cycle without dismissing your concerns.

You may have a diagnosed medical condition, be undergoing testing, or find yourself worried despite reassuring results. We take your medical context seriously while exploring how worry, checking, and uncertainty are affecting your life.

Your experience

Reassurance may not last very long.

Health anxiety can lead to repeated searching, checking your body, asking for reassurance, or avoiding information and appointments. These responses can feel necessary in the moment while making it harder to return to other parts of life.

You may recognize some of these concerns and not others. What matters is how your own experience is affecting you and what you would like help with.

Checking and searching

Spending more time looking for certainty than you intended.

Difficulty feeling reassured

A normal result helps briefly, then another worry takes its place.

Anxiety around care

Feeling overwhelmed before appointments, results, or health discussions.

Understanding your care

Your experience deserves careful attention.

Health anxiety is about the distress and patterns surrounding health concerns. It is not a conclusion that physical symptoms are unreal. Medical concerns and anxiety can coexist, and appropriate medical care remains important.

At Embody Health Psychology, our clinical health psychology perspective considers physical health, emotions, relationships, and daily life together. That biopsychosocial perspective helps us understand your concerns without reducing them to a single cause.

An Integrative Approach

Our integrative approach considers how physical health, emotional experiences, relationships, and daily life influence one another. We draw from different psychological approaches to shape care around your concerns and goals.

We look at the situations that trigger worry, the ways you respond, and what happens afterward. Therapy can help you build more workable responses to uncertainty while respecting the medical follow-up your providers recommend.

You do not need to arrive with a perfect explanation. Your clinician will ask questions, discuss treatment options, and help you choose goals that fit.

Depending on your needs, somatic therapy techniques may focus on grounding through your surroundings and responding to anxiety without repeatedly checking your body. More monitoring is not the goal.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) may help you understand the worried part of you that seeks certainty. We also address reassurance-seeking and avoidance directly, choosing treatment around your symptoms.

Your goals may include:

  • Understanding the worry cycle

Notice triggers, checking, reassurance, and avoidance patterns.

  • Reducing time lost to health worries

Work toward responses that leave more room for everyday life.

  • Approaching medical care more comfortably

Prepare for appointments without trying to eliminate all uncertainty.

  • Addressing related distress

Discuss anxiety, low mood, or other concerns when they are part of your experience.

  • Finding a useful pace

Set priorities that fit your clinical needs and current circumstances.

  • Choosing next steps together

Review what is helpful and whether other care or support is needed.

Common questions

What you may want to know.

Does health anxiety mean there is nothing medically wrong?

No. A person can have a medical condition and health anxiety at the same time. Therapy addresses the anxiety and its impact; it does not decide that new symptoms can be ignored.

Will you tell me to stop seeing my doctor?

No. We can discuss a consistent approach to medical follow-up with your provider when appropriate and authorized. Decisions about medical testing and treatment belong with that provider.

How does coordination with other providers work?

When coordination would be helpful, your clinician can discuss it with you. Sharing confidential clinical information requires appropriate authorization. Together, you can decide what is relevant to share.

Is telehealth available?
